The part that fails is always the drainage

A retaining wall is not holding dirt. It is holding dirt plus whatever water is in that dirt, and water is heavy. A wall built without drainage behind it takes the full hydrostatic load every time it rains, and that is what pushes walls out of plumb and cracks them.

So every wall we build gets drain rock behind it, a pipe at the base with somewhere to go, and filter fabric so the rock does not silt up in three years. It is invisible, it is a real part of the cost, and it is the difference between a wall and a future problem.

Stepped tract lots. Lots of the newer development back yards in Villages of Avalon and Monument Ranch are cut into a slope, so the usable flat area is smaller than the lot. A wall buys back flat ground.

Finishes and what goes with it

Standard block is the workhorse and it disappears once planting is in front of it. Stone-faced reads better where the wall is the thing you look at from the patio. Either way, wall lighting gets run while the wall is being built, because chasing wire into a finished wall is the expensive way to do it.

Walls almost never come alone. The flat ground a wall creates is what gets the turf or the pavers, so they get quoted together.
